How to play Unreal Tournament 3 | UT3

The game UT3 was designed in such a way that all players worldwide had to register with an account in order to play against each other online. This also made it possible to display a list of active servers as well as small community data such as rankings or friends lists.

The ‘GameSpy’ database took over this task. As you know, this was last completely shut down with the master servers at the manufacturer Epic.

‘OpenSpy’ keeps the community alive. OpenSpy is an open source GameSpy clone.
This allows you to log in with your account as usual and display all running UT3 servers
And fortunately it’s very easy! You just have to patch the original UT3.exe and create your account.

Patching the original UT3.exe

There are different ways to replace the UT3.exe

Manual replacement

Downlaod the UT3 patch for windows.

This is a ready file to exchange with the original one.

  • Go to UT3 install destination (e.g. C:/Unreal Tournament)
  • Go to the Binaries folder inside [..\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries] (Steam version can differ)
  • Rename the original Ut3.exe inside Binaries folder to Ut3.exe.bak
(in case you need it again sometime).
  • Now copy the openspy patch into the same folder and rename it to UT3.exe.
Replacement by using an installer

If you are not sure whether everything will work or if you do not trust the download, you will find the following links.
You can download the patches for the UT3-Disc version or for the UT3-Steam version.
They are also available for Linux and Mac OS.

After replacing/ patching

If you have patched the file, start the game, but don’t login yet!
When starting for the first time, you must first create a new account, as your user name must be written to the new openspy database. Just use your usual username/pass or whatever you like.

This is working for all UT3 Server that are using openspy.net
